First EQIP signup deadline is Oct. 19

DES MOINES — Iowa farmers must apply at local USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service offices by Oct. 19 to be considered for the first round of funding selections for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program. One of USDA’s most popular conservation programs, EQIP is offered through a continuous signup, but NRCS periodically makes funding selections.

Through EQIP, NRCS offers financial assistance to install conservation practices. Statewide EQIP practices include, but are not limited to, nutrient management, terraces, grassed waterways, manure management facilities, and pasture management.

Through EQIP, eligible farmers address soil, water and related natural resource concerns on private agricultural lands. Five percent of EQIP financial assistance dollars are set aside for beginning farmers, and another 5 percent is reserved for socially disadvantaged farmers.

To apply for an EQIP contract, contact your local USDA Service Center or go to www.ia.nrcs.usda.gov.

The Daily Iowegian will publish an Editorial Question of the Week on the Opinion page. The Iowegian wants readers to think about the Internal Revenue Service scandal. Dick Polman in an editorial wrote "the IRS' targeting of small-fry conservative groups was not a conspiratorial socialist plot. It was knuckleheaded, ill-supervised bureaucratic ineptitude." So, the question of the week is, "Do you agree or disagree with Polman's analysis of the IRS scandal?"

A. Agree
B. Disagree
C. Not sure
