Centerville FFA team competes in Beef Expo

CENTERVILLE — FFA members from Centerville High School competed in the Beef Expo judging contest on Feb. 10.

Team member, Brett Bauman, had the high individual overall score on the Centerville team.  He placed 131st out of 214 students competing that day; with a score of 510 out of 650.

Evelyn Rogers followed Bauman with a score of 487, Hunter Moore scored 470, Maranda Rupalo 464 and Shelby Thamke scored 425.

This was the first time either Thamke or Rogers had given reasons in competition so it was a learning experience for both of them.  When the reasons class results came out Moore lead the Centerville team and placed 112th with a score of 112 out of 150.

"Our team placed 34th out of 56 teams overall but their reasons placed much higher at 28th place.  Reasons are the challenging part because you have to stand before the judge and explain why you placed the cattle the way you did.  With two team members who had never given reasons before I am very proud of how they did," said Elizebeth Gaskins, Centerville Ag instructor and FFA advisor. "This contest always makes for a long day; leaving Centerville at 6:30 a.m. and not returning until 6 p.m. but the students had fun and gained valuable skills, both in livestock selection and communication."
