The Centerville Community School District finds itself in dire shape according to an open letter from Superintendent Tony Ryan published on the Daily Iowegian’s Education Page Monday, Feb. 13. Read Ryan’s entire letter by clicking on Education in the left column on this page then look for “Open letter from Centerville High School Superintendent Tony Ryan.” Ryan writes the two main negative impacts in recent years affecting the school’s general fund budget are declining enrollment and a lower than supportive rate of allowable growth. “... the options of addressing the situation can be done by utilizing a mixture of three options, as prescribed by the state of Iowa. These options are: (1) using the district cash reserves, (2) increase taxes, (3) reduce spending in our school’s General Fund budget. The Centerville Community School District cannot utilize option one due to not having a consistent positive balance in cash reserves. So, the question this week is, “What school option to address the district’s dire fiscal situation as presented by Ryan appeals to you: Option (2) increase taxes or Option (3) reduce spending in our school’s general fund budget”
