CENTERVILLE —
The Centerville Community School Board unanimously voted to approve the contract of Chuck Evans in a special school board meeting on Monday afternoon. Evans will begin his position August 8 and is replacing Jim Knott after Knott resigned after last season.
“We feel fortunate to have been able to hire Evans as the head football coach at Centerville High School,” CHS athletic director Jim Knott said. “Not only does he have a proven football background but he also has a history of treating his players with respect and dignity. We look forward to having him on board at Centerville High School.”
Evans began his coaching career in 1987 when he became the assistant football coach for Southeast Polk High School. In 1999, he took over the defensive coordinator job at Johnston High School before taking over as the head football coach for Iowa City Regina in 2001. He left high school football in 2006 when he was named director of basketball operations for the University of Iowa women's basketball prgoram that same year, a position he held until 2009.
Evans was named the Class 1A football coach of the year in 2005 by the Iowa Football Coaches Association. He took Iowa City Regina to the playoffs in 2004, 2005 and 2006. In 2004 the team was a state semi-finalist and in 2005 Regina won the state title under his direction. Evans had a record of 41-20 during his six years at Iowa City Regina.
Evans also served as the athletic director in Regina in 2005 and 2006.
Evans is the son of high school coaching legend Bob Evans, who had a career record of 202-91-4 during his time as the head football coach at Mt. Pleasant. Chuck graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1974 and from Iowa State University in 1979.
Evans is contracted to work 104 days at $7.25 per hour, which equates to $5,311.22.
Evans has two sons — Travis and Tyler. He has two grandchildren — Baylie and Paige. Among the notable athletes Evans has coached are Daniel Murray, a former kicker for the University of Iowa, and Mike O'Connell, a former safety of Iowa State University.
Knott was the coach of the Big Reds for the past 11 seasons, recording an overall record of 52-60.
