The Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation donated 8,400 toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss to the Iowa Head Start Association. The donation is part of the Foundation’s long-term strategic goal to have Iowa children ages 0-12 cavity free by 2020. Southern Iowa Economic Development Association will receive a portion of the donation.
“According to the Surgeon General’s Oral Health in America Report, tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease,” said Donn Hutchins, president of the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation.
“We are thankful to the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation for this generous donation,” said Stacey Prevo, division assistant director for Southern Iowa Economic Development Association. “Iowa Head Start programs strive to deliver high quality, comprehensive services to our children and are appreciative of the support to assist in meeting the oral health education needs of our students.”
Head Start is a locally operated, federally funded program that provides a comprehensive child development program for 3-to 5-year-old children from low-income families in 98 of Iowa’s 99 counties. The program provides services to promote academic, social and emotional development, as well as providing social, health and nutrition services. Iowa Head Start serves 8,400 children (2011-2012) in Iowa.
Earlier this year, the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation announced two long-term strategic goals that focus on improving the oral health of Iowa’s children and elderly. For more information go to www.deltadentalia.com.
