FEMA grant application approved for $2.6 million

CENTERVILLE — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded $2,631,186 to Southern Iowa Electric Cooperative to strengthen electric distribution lines to better withstand the effects of ice, snow and high winds. Inclement weather can have a real impact on the infrastructure and power sources for our membership.

This funding will help prevent instances where weather causes electrical problems. The grant funds will provide 85 percent of the funding necessary to strengthen 48 miles of electric distribution lines in Davis, Van Buren and Wapello counties.

The project includes installing additional poles, replacing existing poles with higher strength poles and replacing aging copper conductors.

This is the first of four grant applications that Southern Iowa Electric Cooperative has submitted to FEMA.
