FAIRFIELD —
Mediacom announced today that customers using non-digital televisions will see the effects of a digital upgrade one week later than originally planned, with 10 popular cable channels scheduled to eliminate analog reception on June 19. The dates were changed to allow time for repairs following a fire that occurred May 31 in a Mediacom hub facility located in West Burlington.
As of today, Mediacom reports that its customers in a 10-county area of southeast and south-central Iowa have received more than 25,000 digital adapters in preparation for a phase-out of analog television reception for cable channels 23-78. On two conversion dates, June 19 and June 26, Mediacom’s network upgrade will eliminate the analog component of dual-signal delivery, which means that programming for channels 23 through 78 will be transmitted in a digital-only signal format.
Customers will see the first effects of the change on June 19 when reception for 10 popular channels will be viewable only on digital televisions or televisions connected to Mediacom’s digital cable service or one of the digital adapters provided to extend the lives of older model TVs. The 10 channels that will change on June 19 are: A&E, AMC, Disney Channel, Food Network, HGTV, Hallmark Channel, The History Channel, HLN, Nickelodeon and Spike. Remaining channels between 23 and 78 will convert to digital-only reception on June 26.
The use of a Mediacom digital adapter enables older televisions to continue to display the programming after the conversion to digital-only signal reception. Mediacom is providing customers with digital adapters to use with older, non-digital televisions. The special device is available on a lease-free basis through June 2013 (limited to three per customer). The channels will retain their current numerical locations.
As a result of its network upgrade, Mediacom customers will see the arrival of 65 new high-definition television channels beginning on or around July 10. Mediacom Vice President Doug Frank says his company also plans to double the speeds of its fastest Internet service later in the summer.
Customers who have received one or more of the 25,000 digital adapters are encouraged to connect them to their older televisions; they do not need to wait until the first conversion occurs on June 19. Customers can receive digital adapters by visiting Mediacom’s local offices in Ottumwa, Oskaloosa, Burlington and Keokuk. Or, adapters are shipped to customer homes at no extra charge when ordered by phone or online: www.MediacomCable.com/GetDigital or 1-800-479-2095.
REVISED calendar for phase-out of analog reception (channels 23-78) and change to digital-only Family Cable lineup:
June 19 – phase 1 channel transition. Mediacom will eliminate analog signal carriage for a subset of 10 Family Cable channels.
June 26 – full conversion of Family Cable lineup, channels 23 through 78, to digital reception only.
July 10-13 – target date for launching “BIG HD” – 65 new HD channels to be added to the Mediacom lineup
