CENTERVILLE — A Centerville man received a suspended prison sentence to close out a sexual abuse case where he was charged with abusing two children.

Shayne Hughes, 41, of Centerville, was sentenced on April 17 in Appanoose County following a negotiated guilty plea deal. He pled guilty to two reduced charges of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, each an aggravated misdemeanor.

Judge Rose Anne Mefford sentenced him to two years in prison for both counts, to be served consecutively. Both sentences were suspended, meaning he will not report to prison if he successfully completes a two-year probation period with the Eighth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services. He was also ordered to complete the district's sex offender treatment program and to register as a sex offender.

Hughes is barred from contacting the two victims for five years. He was fined $1,710.

According to court filings from investigators, the assaults involved two victims under the age of 18 years old, and took place over nearly six years. He was charged February 2022 with several other counts, including two counts of second-degree sexual abuse, which were dismissed with the negotiated plea.
