MORAVIA — A former Moravia preschool teacher received a two-day jail sentence and a $105 fine after a negotiated plea deal stemming from an assault of a preschool student.

Erin Michelle Aalfs, 47, of Moravia, pled guilty to one count of assault related to the incident. The other charge was dismissed as part of the plea. She was sentenced by Magistrate Judge James Underwood on April 16.

The charge — a simple misdemeanor — led to a $105 fine and two days in jail, with credit for time already served. Police say on March 10, 2023, Aalfs kicked and threw rocks at a preschool student, and tossed the student towards a metal chain-link fence causing the student to hit the ground and fence. Law enforcement says the student was not injured in the incident.

At the time of the incident, Aalfs was in her second year as a preschool teacher in Moravia. The sheriff's office said she is no longer an employee at the district after having resigned from her position "sometime after the incident was reported," according to their press release.

Aalfs received more severe charges when police went to arrest her on March 29. She pled guilty to a charge of interference with official acts, causing injury, in September and was sentenced to one year in jail and received a fine of $430. The jail sentence was suspended and she was placed on probation for one year.

The district declined to release additional records when The Courier requested them in 2023.
