OSKALOOSA —
The Mahaska County Salvation Army sees child illiteracy as a disaster, so they donated $1,000 to the Parents As Teachers organization to get books into children’s hands.
The Salvation Army presented the money to the Parents As Teachers organization Tuesday afternoon at the Book Vault.
This is the fifth year that the Salvation Army has made the donation “to get books into kids’ hands,” said Jerry Morrison of the Salvation Army.
Morrison said the donation is special because the books will go into children’s homes, so they can read and reread them, and parents can read the books to them as well.
Parents As Teachers Program Manager Jeff Hasley said the books purchased with the donation will go to about 40 to 45 families. When Parents As Teaches representatives visit a home, they will give out one book. They make the distributions once in the summer, at Christmas and in the spring. In all, 150 books will be distributed, he said.
The books are for children ages newborn to 5 years old, he added.
Hasley said research has shown that the earlier parents work on reading with their children, the better children will do in school and in life.
