Penn softball players to compete in Italy

OSKALOOSA — These local softball players will be playing on the world stage next year.

At just 20 years old, William Penn University junior Jennifer Whitehead will play in a softball tour of Italy with the American International Sports Teams softball team in June 2013.

So, how does Whitehead feel about being able to play softball in Italy, if only for a short time?

“It feels really good because, being from Oskaloosa, I never expected a chance like this,” said Whitehead.

Whitehead was chosen from softball players throughout the United States and said it is an honor to have been selected. Molly Miller, a senior softball player at Penn, will also participate in the tour of Italy next year, said Whitehead.

“It just shows how developed our program has been,” said Whitehead in reference to the Penn softball program.

Whitehead explained that the past awards earned by herself and Miller are likely what earned them spots on the AIST team.

“They dig deep and try to find people who stand out that have been leaders for the past few years,” Whitehead said. “Molly and I had both achieved that.”

Whitehead said she earned Pitcher of the Year two years in a row. The team has also earned first team all-conference and led as conference champions. Whitehead said she’s also been recognized with all-region and honorable mention - All American.

Whitehead and Miller will leave for Italy June 10, 2013 and will remain there through the 21st of that month. While in Italy, Whitehead said she and Miller will participate in numerous games against teams from different countries.

“We’ll play against other countries, but we’ll have ‘America’ on our shirt, so it’s kind of cool,” Whitehead said.
