Many people braved the bitting wind at noon Friday to walk around the city square to raise awareness of breast cancer.
Mahaska Health Partnership held its eighth-annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk Friday to raise money for the Southeast Iowa Affiliate of Komen for the Cure.
“This event is for anyone and everyone to support the cause,” MHP PR/Marketing Coordinator Cassie Riley said before the walk.
Participants paid $25 and received a T-shirt to wear for the walk. MHP will donate event proceeds to Komen for the Cure. MHP receives grant money from the organization to provide free digital mammograms for women who have a financial need.
More than 160 people registered for the hour-long event, Riley said.
In addition to walking around the city square for an hour to raise awareness of breast cancer, volunteers emplaced 2,000 pink flags on the city square to signify each of the 2,000 who will be diagnosed in Iowa with breast cancer, Riley said.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the walk was the first event of the month, Riley said.
Several businesses will have a Blue Jeans Friday to raise money for Komen for the Cure, Riley said. Also, MHP will host a Free Women’s Breast Health Night on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Gateway Church of the Nazarene Youth Center in Oskaloosa. Preregistration is required.
