Knoxville library will purchase Gebhardt House

KNOXVILLE — Knoxville's public library plans to purchase the former home of the woman who designed the Iowa state flag. The announcement that the library has raised enough money to make the purchase was made Wednesday.

"We are now able to purchase the Dixie Gebhardt home," Library Board President Dave Garcia announced to a crowd of approximately 30 people.

Local foundations stepped up in a big way, including the Marion County Community Foundation, which donated $15,000, and the Knoxville Heritage Community Foundation, which pledged $45,000 over the next three years.

Knoxville residents Don and Margaret Long also made a donation of $100,000. They decided to make the donation in March, before fund raising for the house really began.

"We're glad to see the historic house purchased," Margaret Long said.

"We were waiting to give the committee time to raise additional funds," Don Long added. They are glad to support the community in this way.

The board faced a deadline of Aug. 31 in its fundraising efforts. Purchase of the Gebhardt house is part of an ongoing project to expand the library.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the debate Rep. Larry Sheets talks about at the state capital centered on "accepting Medicaid expansion as defined by the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), or choosing to create an Iowa specific health care program. Those who prefer the Medicaid expansion believe the federal government will fulfill its commitments three years from now. Those opposing explain that the federal government is only capable of that by borrowing the money from the Chinese." So, the question this week is, "Should Iowa accept the federal government's Medicaid expansion or create a health care program specific to the state?"

A. Accept Medicaid expansion.
B. Create health care program.
