OTTUMWA —
What do a wry 10-year-old, a cop with a very big gun and a very confused web hacker have in common? As of Wednesday, movies featuring all three are part of the National Film Registry.
The registry announced the addition of 25 films, including "A Christmas Story," "Dirty Harry," and "The Matrix," as movies worthy of preservation. They aren't necessarily the best films of all time, the registry stresses, but they all made a significant impact on American culture and have become part of the nation's film heritage.
The earliest addition from this year's batch is the Corbett-Fitzsimmons title fight from 1897. It was among the earliest professional boxing matches in Nevada following the state's decision to legalize the sport. The film was a success because the fight lasted for 14 rounds, rather than with a quick knockout.
"The Matrix," released in 1999, is the newest film in this year's group. The 1992 film "A League of Their Own" isn't far behind.
