OSKALOOSA —
Brad Arterburn was sentenced to life in prison Monday afternoon in Mahaska County District Court for the murder of Robert Henry “Hank” Horovitz.
Arterburn, 27, of Oskaloosa, was charged with the first-degree murder of his mother’s boyfriend, Robert Henry “Hank” Horovitz, 58, of Davenport, on June 19, 2011.
Arterburn was convicted in October after a week-long trial in Mahaska County District Court.
First degree murder is a Class A felony with a mandatory life sentence. Judge Lucy Gamon sentenced Arterburn to life in prison without parole, unless the governor commutes his sentence. He also has to pay $150,000 in damages to Horovitz’s family and $5,253.15 in pecuniary damages as well as his court-appointed attorney fees.
Gamon told Arterburn he had 30 days in which to appeal his sentence and there was no bond for his appeal.
Arterburn will be transported immediately to the Iowa prison system’s intake facility at Oakdale, near Iowa City.
