Guiding soon-to-be graduates is their goal.
A new program is emerging at William Penn University aimed at pairing students with those who can serve as valuable mentors.
In an effort encompassing Penn President Dr. Ann Fields, those in the Career Services Department, Alumni Relations, as well as faculty and students, the William Penn Career Mentoring Program is taking shape.
According to Penn’s Web site, this with provide “a direct link between the classroom and professional world.”
Luas Islas, who works with the Career Mentoring Program, said the program began to be developed in late 2012. Islas said by January, university staff members and others began joining the program.
Islas said one of the major goals of the program is to make sure students are successful once they graduate. The program also aims to involve alumni as mentors to current students.
“They would be career professionals that have been in the work force for two years that are successful and that are willing to help current William Penn students,” explained Islas.
Of course, mentors would be paired up with students looking to join the field in which the mentor has already found success.
Knowing the right people is an important thing to have for recent graduates. Islas said networking is a focus of the mentoring program.
In the long term, Islas said the program should help create a bond between alumni and students. He said those who are mentored in the program could eventually become mentors themselves after graduating and working in their field for two years.
Career professionals interested in becoming a mentor with the program do not necessarily have to be Penn alumni, said Islas.
The pairing process for the program is going on right now, said Islas.
