Frigid New Year's Day forecast

OTTUMWA — The weekend won't be bad, but forecasters say southeast Iowa will get off to a very cold start to 2013.

That's not entirely a surprise. Historically, the second and third weeks of January are the coldest of the year, with highs averaging only 31 degrees. New Year's Day will be much colder, with the National Weather Service forecasting a high of only 19.

Don't like that prediction? Sorry, but other forecasts aren't any better. The Weather Channel is predicting a high of 16 in Ottumwa, while Weather Undergound and Accuweather both peg the high at only 14.

There is some significant disagreement on forecasts as people head back to work and school late next week. Thursday's high will be in the low teens according to most forecasters, but Accuweather predicts it will rise to only 8 during the day.

There's not much to do but wait it out. Temperatures will rise again, but for now it's Iowa. It's winter.
