Area video game players in Guinness Book

OSKALOOSA — The popularity and abundance of video games these days is undeniable.

With the growth of video games from the arcades of the 1980s, many video game enthusiasts have gone for the all-time high score in dozens of video game titles.

Tim McVey, of Oskaloosa, is one of those enthusiasts.

McVey has been an avid gamer since the 1980s, and noted the leaps and bounds video games have taken over the years from arcades to consoles like the Atari and Nintendo at first to modern video game consoles like the Xbox 360. He even noted the growth of portable video gaming on tablets and smart phones.

“There’s just gaming everywhere,” said McVey.

His name can be found among the pages of the Guinness World Records 2013 Gamer’s Edition. McVey was inducted into the book for scores in titles such as Nibbler, Dig Dug, Joust, Frogger and Time Pilot.

One of the entries for McVey’s playing of Nibbler was set during Christmas 2011 when he did a marathon record of playing the classic arcade title.

“It actually feels pretty good,” said McVey of being noted in the Guinness world Record 2013 Gamer’s Edition.

McVey also said it feels good to see video game play recognized in general, adding that its not about money or fame, but a sense of pride.

This is the sixth year the Gamer’s Edition has been published, noted McVey.

Another local gamer, Ray Lapsey, also appears in the Guinness World Records 2013 Gamer’s Edition for his playing of Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition on the XBox 360 game console. He appears in the edition with his first name, John, while he’s known to friends like McVey as Ray. Ray said he also appears in the Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition.

“I think it’s pretty cool,” Lapsey said, noting that he likes the fact that he can buy the records book and show friends and family. “They’re the ones to go for world records.”

Lapsey said he’s going to continue playing video games for the fun of it, not necessarily records. McVey said he’ll continue to go for high scores.

“There’s a bunch of scores I saw and said, ‘I can beat that,’” said McVey.
