OTTUMWA —
A major accident made a mess of Ottumwa traffic Wednesday morning.
At about 9:30 a.m. a tanker truck with diesel fuel overturned on Highway 34. The crash forced authorities to close down Highway 34 through most of Ottumwa and shunt traffic onto side streets. Heavy traffic was reported on multiple routes, especially Church Street and Richmond Avenue, with unconfirmed reports of additional accidents due to the volume.
There were no injuries immediately reported as a result of the overturned trailer or other accidents.
The situation was serious enough for the city to issue a statement urging people to avoid Highway 34 in the area of Ottumwa Park. The statement cited cleanup efforts, though it was unclear whether the tanker was breached.
Scanner traffic indicated crews had to cut into the tanker to remove the fuel before the truck could be removed.
