Three killed in Jefferson County crash

FAIRFIELD — Three people died Wednesday night in a one-vehicle crash in Jefferson County.

The Iowa State Patrol says the crash happened at 10:20 p.m. at Old Highway 34 and Hemlock. A Chevrolet Camaro driven by Martin Durflinger, 23, Ottumwa, was westbound on Old Highway 34 "at a high rate of speed." The vehicle missed a curve and slammed into a light pole. The collision rolled the car several times.

Two passengers, Robbie Abel, 23, Hedrick and Harry Blodgett, 21, Brighton, were ejected in the crash. They, along with Durflinger, were pronounced dead at Jefferson County Hospital.

The patrol says it is continuing to investigate the crash.

The Daily Iowegian will publish an Editorial Question of the Week on the Opinion page. The Iowegian wants readers to think about the Internal Revenue Service scandal. Dick Polman in an editorial wrote "the IRS' targeting of small-fry conservative groups was not a conspiratorial socialist plot. It was knuckleheaded, ill-supervised bureaucratic ineptitude." So, the question of the week is, "Do you agree or disagree with Polman's analysis of the IRS scandal?"

B. Disagree
C. Not sure
