Cincinnati Elementary attempts to collect 100 canned food items for 100th day of school

It looks as though there are six more weeks of winter. Mr. Groundhog spotted his shadow. We can hope the worst is behind us and we only see sunshine and warmer temperatures from here on out. It seems like this has been a long, cold winter and it came early.

Congratulations to Connor Hand, a first grader in Mrs. Higbee’s class at Cincinnati Elementary on Student of the Month. Cincinnati Elementary students are going to be celebrating their 100th day of school and with that the students have a goal to donate 100 canned food items to the local food bank. They are asking all students interested in participating to bring canned food to school by Feb. 8.

Mark your calendars for Cincinnati Elementary’s Family Reading Night. It will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. Also bring your box tops to school. The school receives 10 cents for each one collected and it’s also fun for the students, because when they bring them in they are entered into a drawing for a prize each month. Box tops are found on lots of miscellaneous items such as: cake mixes, cereals, etc. If you don’t have a child or know a child that attends Cincinnati Elementary and you want to donate your box tops, feel free to drop them by the school during school hours.

Kindergarten Round Up is just around the corner. It will be on Wednesday, March 17 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Round Up is for any child who will be 5 years old by Sept. 15. If your child will be attending Cincinnati Elementary call the school at (641) 856-0739 to register by Feb. 26 so that the school can mail information to your home about Round Up activities.

The Drake Public Library is having a raffle fundraiser to promote literacy. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5, available at Drake Library and J&K; Market. The drawing will be April 15.

Items to be raffled are a handmade "I Spy" quilt, a Good Ship J&K; dinner boat cruise for four ($750 value) includes steak, baked potato, salad, dessert and drinks in summer 2010, five pounds of ground chuck from J&K; Market (2), five pounds of homemade sausage from J&K; Market (2), handmade bookmarks (11) donated by the "Stitching Bee" needlework group, winter scene print, Friends of the Drake Public Library T-shirts, Friends of the Drake Public Library tote bags (10), afghans (2) and "I Spy" books (five sets of three) donated by Wal-Mart.

Plan to attend the Soup Supper being held on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 5-7 p.m. at the Cincinnati Community Center. This supper is being held by the local Pleasant Workers 4H Club and all proceeds are being donated to the city for the emergency shelter generator fund. This is something everyone should really come out to support.

Let’s Go Big Reds! This Friday night come watch the little cheerleaders of Buffy’s Dance Department cheer on the Centerville Big Reds at the Lakeview Gym at half-time of the varsity basketball game. These little girls are something to watch, so come out and enjoy the show and cheer on the Big Reds to a victory!

Here’s a recipe wonderful for Super Bowl Sunday!

Grill Master

Chicken Wings

Wings:

1/2 cup soy sauce

1/2 cup Italian dressing

3 lbs. chicken wings, cut apart at joints, wing tips discarded

Sauce:

1/4 cup butter

1 tsp. soy sauce

1/4 cup hot pepper sauce

Combine 1/2 cup soy sauce, Italian dressing and chicken wings in a large, zip-top bag. Close bag and refrigerate four hours to overnight.

Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat. In a small saucepan, melt the butter. Stir in the 1 tsp. soy sauce and the hot pepper sauce. Turn off heat and reserve.

Remove the chicken wings from the marinade and pat dry. Cook the wings on the preheated grill, turning occasionally, until the chicken is well browned and no longer pink, 25 to 30 minutes.

Place grilled wings in a large bowl. Pour butter sauce over wings; toss to mix well.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the recent decision by the Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Directors to increase the fee for late payment of water bills. In a story published in Wednesday's Ad Express, board members announced a 10 percent late fee after two days late, a $50 red tag fee for accounts unpaid after seven days late and a $25 shut off fee, water service terminated after two weeks late. The board said the decision to increase the fees associated with late payment is to encourage customers to pay their bills on time. So, the question this week is, "Are these fees too much to ask for?"

A. Yes, they are.
B. No, they are not.
C. I'm not affected so I don't care.
