It sure was kind of a surprise to wake up on Wednesday morning, this week, to see our first sign of snow on the grass and the vehicles. Whether we like it or not, winter is fast approaching.
My grandmother, who lived in New Jersey that was my mom’s mother, was a good cook. I remember when I was young, going to her house and making different things with her. She was always trying new and different recipes.
The recipe for this week is one of her’s that I thought I would try. It is called:
Apple Crumble
Crumble Ingredients
6 to 8 apples, peeled and cored
½ cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
½ cup flour
Hard Sauce
8 Tablespoons of butter
½ cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Directions
Pre-heat the oven to 450 degrees.
To make the crumble, after peeling and coring the apples, slice them into wedges and set aside. Combine the butter, brown sugar and flour together in a separate bowl.
Butter a 9” by 9” baking dish. Pour the apples into the baking dish and spread evenly. Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the top of the apples.
Bake in a 450 degree oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat down to 300 degrees and bake approximately 30 more minutes, until the apples are soft and done. Then, remove from the oven and place on a cooling rack.
The Hard Sauce is made by combing the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl. Beat with a mixer until it is the consistency of whipped cream and then add the vanilla. Blend in the vanilla. Then pour the Hard Sauce over the warm Apple Crumble for a delectable dessert.
The Exline Royal Neighbors Camp 3000, held their Trick or Treat Night at the community center on Halloween weekend, for all of the local children to come and get their treats. Some of the group’s members, even dressed up for the occasion.
With all of the election information going on in the media, it is hard to believe the presidential race is still a year away. The local election of candidates was held this past Tuesday.
In Exline there was one person officially running for mayor and quite a few candidates running for City Council.
The unofficial results of Tuesday’s election in Exline were that Jim Casteel received the most votes for the office of mayor.
For City Council, the results were Gary Hull with 26 votes, Terry Hand 25, Jim Burns 23, Mary Ann Hurley 21, John Matheny 19 and Doug Carlston received 13 votes. There are five seats available on the local city council. Congratulations to the candidates. I hope your candidate won!
Do you realize that tomorrow, the date will be 11-11-11? Since there is no mail delivery on Friday because it is Veteran’s Day, there will not be any mail delivery and no newspaper will be printed. That is why this article is appearing a day early this week.
In case you have been wondering, work has begun on installing the stand that will hold the original church bell that used to be in the Methodist Church in Exline.
It is being donated to the town, by Larry and Carol Drake. It will be displayed on the church’s original site, in what is now known as Hero’s Park, on the southeast corner of East Wall and South First Streets.
When the weather straightens out, they will get the concrete poured for the stand, so the bell can be installed.
The concrete will be faced with bricks that you can purchase individually for $50 a piece. You may have two names placed on each brick, for your donation. It is estimated that it may take 100 bricks to complete the stand.

If you have not noticed, the Exline Old Country Store, began its winter hours last Sunday evening. The store will continue to open at 7 o’clock in the morning but it will now close one hour earlier for the wintertime, at 7 p.m. in the evening.
There is going to be a Harvest Dinner at the Exline Community Center this Monday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m.
The dinner will be sponsored by the Exline Royal Neighbors Camp 3000. They will be providing the meat, potatoes, rolls and drinks. Everyone who plans to be there, needs to bring a covered dish of your choice of food, to add to the meal. The dinner is open to anyone that would like to attend.

Still time to buy brick for bell pedestal
Has everyone gotten adjusted to Daylight Savings Time yet? It is kind of strange at first because it stays darker in the morning now and is lighter later into the evening. We will eventually get used to it. Hasn’t the weather been fantastic for the most part, with temperatures in the 70s? The spring flowers will be in bloom before you know it.

The weather continues to be different. One day it is snowing and another day it is sunny and mild. With this continued mild weather, the spring flowers plants and shrubs will soon be coming into flower, which will be earlier than usual. At least we are not experiencing those severe tornadoes like a lot of other places have been having.
