CENTERVILLE —
All the seniors at the 18-80 Club wish you a very Happy New Year! We look forward to an even better new year in 2012. If you are new to the area or just haven’t tried what the site has to offer, this is a great time to do so. We would love to have you stop by and see our wonderful facility and get a monthly schedule.
We start the month off on the Jan. 10 with a Wii bowling tournament. This will start at 10 a.m. with brackets being run every half hour. The start of the New Year allows everyone back in the running to be the monthly winner. So, game on again for all. Winners from all brackets will have the play-off just after lunch.
Wednesday, Jan. 11 we will have the Appanoose County Public Health nurses in taking blood pressures. This will start at 10:30 a.m. and run until the meal at 11:30 a.m. Our weekly caregiver’s session will be just before lunch also.
Friday, Jan. 13 we will have a special day with the meal being; ham balls, scalloped potatoes, broccoli and apple raisin crisp with ice cream for the ones eating in. Bingo will be played at 10:45 a.m. just prior to lunch.
Monday, Jan. 16 is Martin Luther King Day and the site will be closed. If you need a meal option for this day, be sure to discuss it with the staff prior to Friday, Jan. 13.
Wednesday, Jan. 18 we will have Gail Smith with Iowa State Extension in giving the monthly Chef Charles Program at 10:45 a.m. Gail will also be giving the daily exercise session. Some of the seniors enjoy walking in the building before lunch. If you are interested in doing this just ask someone at the desk and we will be glad to discuss it with you.
Thursday, Jan. 19 will be the January birthday party with co-op and bingo at 5 p.m. Bring your favorite covered dish and table service and enjoy the night. We only pray that the weather will continue to be as nice as it is now, however if you are in doubt if there is going to be an event remember to always call prior to coming.
Monday, Jan. 23 we will have “Deal or No Deal.” The menu for the day is; spaghetti, green beans, seven-layer salad, pears, orange juice and hot bread sticks. The game will start at 10:45 a.m., so plan to be in early. This game is played with each table against the other table of seniors. As we always use to say, two heads are better than one.
Wednesday, Jan. 25 we will have the Mercy Home Care Nurses in with a program on blood pressures and they will also be taking blood pressures prior to lunch.
Tuesday, Jan. 31 will the second Wii Bowling Tournament for the month. Call to sign up or stop by the office while you are in eating and get in on the fun.
I remind you that Feb. 7 will be the trip meeting for 2012. We will be voting on the one-day trips, three-day trips and have the brochures available for the longer trips with dates and costs. This meeting will start at 3 p.m. I will again remind you if the weather is not on our side, always call before driving to the club.
Another reminder as we start into another year, dues need to be paid. Once again this year they are $10 per person. Many of you ask if we would raise this amount and to anyone that feels they could afford to give a little extra that would be fine.

Life Saver celebrates 100 years in existence
I hope everyone had a nice time ringing in the New Year! Now, everyone will have to get used to writing 2013 on everything. It always seems like it takes a while to get use to doing that.

The wonder of Wonder Bread and then along came ‘Twinkies,’ ‘Ding Dongs’ and ‘Ho Hos’
It seems the weather has finally changed to more seasonal, colder conditions for this time of year. I guess this change, helps get everyone into the Christmas spirit as they go about their holiday shopping.

Good turn out for Royal Neighbors ice cream social
Wasn’t that nice how we received some much needed rain fall last weekend? We ended up with almost two inches of rain in our gauge last weekend from those rain storms. By Monday, some of our grass in our yard began to turn green again after the long, dry summer.

Sign up for ‘Miss Exline’ competition by Friday, June 15
I hope everyone enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend. The flags lining Main Street and along the Exline Cemetery, sure looked nice furling in the wind, over the holiday. It is hard to believe it is the month of June already.

Spring clean up days coming in May
I hope everyone survived the pranks that some people play on April Fool’s Day. Isn’t it something how earlier in the week we had more summer like weather, so early in the springtime?
The recipe for this week, I thought was appropriate for this time of the year. -

History of telephone service in Appanoose County; Easter eggs still available to purchase
The early springtime weather sure has been enjoyable. Some people say we may have a cold snap to interrupt this stretch of good weather. We just have to hope we do not get any late spring snow storms like we have experienced in the past.
