CENTERVILLE —
The state fair concluded last Sunday, with over 1,080,000 people in attendance this year, which was the second highest number of people ever to attend the fair.
Plus, school has already began this week and the first football game of the season is tonight, so the autumn season is fast approaching. You can really tell, because it is now getting darker a lot earlier than it does during the middle of the summer.
The recipe for this week is in keeping with the cobblers that are going to be prepared for this weeks’ Cowboy Ice Cream Social in Exline. I do not know what kinds they are going to make but I thought this one sounded pretty good.
Blackberry Cobbler
Ingredients:
1/2 c. butter
1 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. sugar
1 tbsp. baking powder
1/8 tsp. salt
2/3 c. milk
1 (16 oz.) pkg. frozen blackberries, thawed
Directions:
Melt butter in a two quart casserole. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and milk in a small mixing bowl, mix well.
Pour mixture over melted butter, do not stir. Spoon blackberries over batter; do not stir.
Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream on top.
At the Iowa State Fair this year, Ava Hutton won second place for having the longest pigtails, for the second year in a row.
Ava is the daughter of Curt and Holly Hutton and her grandparents are John and Pat Huebner of rural Exline.
Another winner at the fair this year was, The Exline Ramblers 4-H Club. They received a Blue Ribbon for their Sand Activities Building.
One of the clubs members, Trey McCoy, won three Purple and one Blue Ribbon for showing Market and Commercial Sheep. He also won a Blue Ribbon for his submission of a Western Horse Pillow.
Jordan McCoy has returned to Marshalltown Community Collage for the fall semester, where he is also on the college baseball team. This fall he is going to be the residential advisor, for the dorm at the college.
On Aug. 20 of this month, Scott and Jodie McCoy celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary. Congratulations to them.
From what I understand, the new culverts have been installed in he town cemetery. They were washed out with the heavy rain we had some time ago. The culverts were provided through funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The Cowboy Ice Cream Social is going to be held Saturday, Aug. 27 at the community center. It will be hosted by the Exline Royal Neighbors, Camp 3000.
John Overgard and his crew, will be outside making cobblers in Dutch Ovens over the open fires with coals, like the pioneers used to do.
This event will begin that evening at 5:30 p.m. but if you would like to come and watch them make the cobblers, that will begin around 3 p.m. or so.
They will also be serving homemade ice cream, cookie bars and cakes, along with the cobblers.
A free will offering, will be accepted for the food.
In true pioneer style. the Exline Royal Neighbors members, are encouraging everyone that plans to attend, to wear their western hat and a bandana around their neck. So, plan to come down, for an end of summer treat.

Good turn out for Royal Neighbors ice cream social
Wasn’t that nice how we received some much needed rain fall last weekend? We ended up with almost two inches of rain in our gauge last weekend from those rain storms. By Monday, some of our grass in our yard began to turn green again after the long, dry summer.
