CENTERVILLE —
Dear Editor,
The proposal to build rent-to own homes is a prime example of government gone wrong. While the nation struggles to recover from housing bubble, the Iowa Finance Authority ROSE Program offers more of what caused the problem.
There is no valid reason for taxpayer dollars to build 3BR, 2BA, 2 car garage 1,600-1,800 sq. ft. "starter homes." The homes seem to have grown from when the Dec. 9 Iowegian introduced this project as 3BR, 1BA, 1,300 sq. ft. homes that rent for $600-$650 per month and can be purchased after 15 years of renting.
I'm sure these will cost far more than $100,000, yet Iowegian classifieds show 42 homes for sale for less than $100,000 and I'm sure there are plenty for rent.
Yes, construction will create jobs, but at what long-term cost? Fiscal common sense must be restored if the nation is to ever recover from the mistakes of the last decade.
Renting until you can afford to buy is responsible. Tax dollars should not be used to compete with local landlords and local people who have homes for sale.
Eliminating the ROSE Program is a good place to cut wasteful state spending.
