Volunteers keep Oakland Cemetery beautiful

CENTERVILLE — Dear Editor,

As we enter a new year it is important to remember some of the people who have helped make Centerville a place to enjoy a good quality of life. Many have contributed in various ways.

We particularly want to recognize our city street department for the work done at Oakland Cemetery. Department head, Ron Creagan, and his crew greatly improved the water runoff problem that damaged graves on the east side of the creek.

A local concrete supplier provided material to redo the front sidewalk at the cemetery chapel. Tom Carson and Dave Moorman provided the necessary labor.

We also appreciate the mowing crews and the volunteers who pick up trash and fallen branches and, of course, master gardener, Paulette Sells, who generously cares for the fountain area near the chapel.

Mayor and Centerville council members, we thank you for supporting improvements at Oakland Cemetery. It all improves our community.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about President Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama was elected president, two significant things have occurred: The military repealed the "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" policy allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve and just recently he publicly said he supports gay marriage. For some, these actions signal a shift away from God, morality and threatens national security. Others say it's about time people in same-sex relationships can wed and openly gay service members do not threaten national security. Now, depending on who you listen to, President Obama is the first "gay" president of the United States. Is that something to worry about? So, the question this week is, "President Barack Obama, the first "gay" president of the United States. Is it cause for concern?"

A. Yes it is.
B. No it is not.
C. Don't care.
D. Not sure.
