CENTERVILLE —
Every Thursday the Daily Iowegian will publish an Editorial Question of the Week on the Opinion page.
This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the possibility the Iowa Legislature will vote to increase gasoline taxes in Iowa.
State Sen. Tom Rielly (D-Oskaloosa) and Rep. David Tjepkes (R-Gowrie), the respective chairs of the Senate and House Transportation Committees, announced bipartisan legislation that would increase Iowa's gas tax by 4 cents in 2013 and an additional four cents in 2014.
The Iowa Farm Bureau has endorsed the increase and Gov. Terry Branstad recently said he "might support a gasoline tax increase in 2014 or later, but not now."
Iowa last raised its gas tax in 1989. Supporters of a tax increase say Iowa's roads and bridges are badly in need of repairs.
So, the question this week is, "Are you in favor of the proposed gasoline tax increases — 4 cents in 2013 and an additional four cents in 2014 — as proposed by Sen. Rielly and Rep. Tjepkes?"
A. Yes, I am in favor of the proposed increases.
B. No, I am not in favor of the proposed increases.
Go to the Daily Iowegian website, www.dailyiowegian.com, and scroll down the home page to POLL on the right hand side and cast your vote. Or call the Iowegian office at (641) 856-6336 or email the editor at iowegianeditor@mchsi.com to cast a vote.
Vote on the Question of the Week up until Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 12 p.m. The results will be published in the Thursday, Jan. 19 paper along with a new question.
Here are the results from the last poll question: “Keep the supermajority of four or go to a simple majority of three council members to terminate a city department head?”
A. Keep the supermajority of four received 52 votes.
B. Go to the simple majority of three received 99 votes.
