Was Tuesday’s FSA meeting necessary

CENTERVILLE — Every Thursday the Daily Iowegian will publish an Editorial Question of the Week on the Opinion page.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the proposed closing of the Farm Service Agency office in Centerville. The United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. wants to close three FSA offices in southern Iowa and consolidate the operations in order to save money.

Tuesday afternoon a meeting was held at Faith United Methodist Church to allow farmers and other producers who use the Centerville FSA office to make comments about the closing to John R. Whitaker, state executive director Iowa Farm Service Agency. Many questioned if the meeting Tuesday was necessary because the decision had already been made.

So, the question this week is, “Will it stay or will it go?”

Go to the Daily Iowegian website, www.dailyiowegian.com, and scroll down the home page to POLL on the right hand side and cast your vote. Or call the Iowegian office at (641) 856-6336 or email the editor at iowegianeditor@mchsi.com to cast a vote.

Vote on the Question of the Week up until Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 12 p.m. The results will be published in the Thursday, Feb. 9 paper along with a new question.

Here are the results from the last poll question: “Will groundhog Phil emerge from its hole on Groundhog Day thus ending winter or will Phil retreat back into its hole to continue winter for another six weeks?”

A. Emerge and it’s springtime received 82  votes.

B. Retreat and it’s six more weeks of winter received 71 votes.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about President Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama was elected president, two significant things have occurred: The military repealed the "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" policy allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve and just recently he publicly said he supports gay marriage. For some, these actions signal a shift away from God, morality and threatens national security. Others say it's about time people in same-sex relationships can wed and openly gay service members do not threaten national security. Now, depending on who you listen to, President Obama is the first "gay" president of the United States. Is that something to worry about? So, the question this week is, "President Barack Obama, the first "gay" president of the United States. Is it cause for concern?"

A. Yes it is.
B. No it is not.
C. Don't care.
D. Not sure.
