Valentine’s Day: A day for romance or just another day

CENTERVILLE — Every Thursday the Daily Iowegian will publish an Editorial Question of the Week on the Opinion page.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, Feb. 14. Is it a day contrived, as syndicated columnist Tom Purcell said in his column published in Thursday’s Daily Iowegian editorial page.

“Most men ... Valentine's Day is a contrived undertaking that makes mandatory the things — flowers, dining out, expensive jewelry — that should be reserved for the times when we do something really stupid and are desperate to make up,” Purcell states.

Is Purcell right?

So, the question this week is, “Men, do you plan to do something special for the woman in your life, or is Valentine’s Day a contrived day? And for our women readers, cast your vote if the man in your life is or isn’t going to plan something special.”

Go to the Daily Iowegian website, www.dailyiowegian.com, and scroll down the home page to POLL on the right hand side and cast your vote. Or call the Iowegian office at (641) 856-6336 or email the editor at iowegianeditor@mchsi.com to cast a vote.

Vote on the Question of the Week up until Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 12 p.m. The results will be published in the Thursday, Feb. 16 paper along with a new question.

Here are the results from the last poll question: Has Washington already decided to close the FSA office and was the meeting in Centerville on Jan. 31 even necessary? So, the question is, “Will it stay or will it go?”

A. Yes, (to stay) because Washington will listen received 17 votes.

B. No, (to stay) because the decision to close the Appanoose County FSA office has already been made received 103 votes.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about President Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama was elected president, two significant things have occurred: The military repealed the "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" policy allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve and just recently he publicly said he supports gay marriage. For some, these actions signal a shift away from God, morality and threatens national security. Others say it's about time people in same-sex relationships can wed and openly gay service members do not threaten national security. Now, depending on who you listen to, President Obama is the first "gay" president of the United States. Is that something to worry about? So, the question this week is, "President Barack Obama, the first "gay" president of the United States. Is it cause for concern?"

A. Yes it is.
B. No it is not.
C. Don't care.
D. Not sure.
