Free help available for college financial aid; volunteers to help families fill out FAFSA

WEST DES MOINES — Iowa students and families can get free assistance with forms required for federal financial aid at Iowa College Goal Sunday, held Saturday, Feb. 18 through Sunday, Feb. 26 in 31 Iowa locations.

Volunteers for Iowa College Goal SundaySM will help students and their families fill out and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid as part of a national program that helps students qualify for federal financial aid. The FAFSA, which is available in free paper and electronic forms from the U.S. Department of Education, is the first step in the qualification process.

"This program is great for anyone who has questions or wants free help with the FAFSA," said Jennifer Coffman, state coordinator of the 2012 Iowa College Goal Sunday. "It's especially helpful for students who are low-income or are in the first generation of their families to attend college, or both."

This year, Iowa College Goal Sunday is a week-long event, and will be held in 27 Iowa communities at the locations below beginning Saturday, Feb. 18 through Sunday, Feb. 26. Students or parents may attend individually, but it's best if the student and at least one parent or guardian come together. Certain paperwork is required to fill out the forms.

•Centerville: Feb. 22; Indian Hills Community College; 721 N. First St.

•Ottumwa : Feb. 26; Indian Hills Community College; 525 Grandview Ave.

The program is funded by grants from Lumina Foundation for Education. A number of Iowa organizations have partnered to plan and present Iowa College Goal Sunday.

* W-2 forms or other records of income earned last year

* Current bank statements and investment records

* Records of untaxed income received last year

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about President Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama was elected president, two significant things have occurred: The military repealed the "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" policy allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve and just recently he publicly said he supports gay marriage. For some, these actions signal a shift away from God, morality and threatens national security. Others say it's about time people in same-sex relationships can wed and openly gay service members do not threaten national security. Now, depending on who you listen to, President Obama is the first "gay" president of the United States. Is that something to worry about? So, the question this week is, "President Barack Obama, the first "gay" president of the United States. Is it cause for concern?"

A. Yes it is.
B. No it is not.
C. Don't care.
D. Not sure.
