Unique musical performance set for Indian Hills Community College

OTTUMWA — “Two Pianos, Eight Hands” is the name of a special musical performance scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 24 at Indian Hills Community College.

The free performance will begin at 3 p.m. in St. John Auditorium on the college’s Ottumwa campus. A reception honoring the quartet will follow the presentation.

The concert will feature the talents of Margaret Kistler, Cheryl Miller, Michael Philipsen and Tom Shadonix performing a variety of four-handed and eight-handed selections for piano including “Hungarian Dances” by Brahms, “Marche Slave” by Tchaikovsky and music by Mozart, Sousa and others.

Philipsen, IHCC director of performing and visual arts, said a large number of composers have written original music for two or more pianists. Although today the literature is largely unknown, there are a number of two pianist teams which perform professionally throughout the world. Philipsen said the music has a different sound and impact from the sound of one pianist at a single keyboard, and in fact, much of it is symphonic in scope.

Kistler is a private piano teacher and church organist with degrees in piano performance from the University of Texas-El Paso and the University of Houston.

Miller is also a private piano teacher and has accompanied many Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra guest artists through the years, and will be featured soloist with the Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra in May. She holds a degree in piano performance from Truman State University.

Philipsen teaches theory and private voice and piano and directs two of the IHCC choirs. He has also performed extensively as a soloist and accompanist and has played with the Southeast Iowa and the Ottumwa Symphony orchestras. Philipsen holds degrees in piano performance from Simpson College and the University of Missouri.

Shadonix is the director of music at St. Mary’s of the Visitation Catholic Church in Ottumwa and is also heard extensively as a member of the Court Hill String Band. His degrees in music are from the University of Northern Iowa and Drake University. He also teaches private voice, piano, organ and violin lessons.

Poll

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the recent decision by the Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Directors to increase the fee for late payment of water bills. In a story published in Wednesday's Ad Express, board members announced a 10 percent late fee after two days late, a $50 red tag fee for accounts unpaid after seven days late and a $25 shut off fee, water service terminated after two weeks late. The board said the decision to increase the fees associated with late payment is to encourage customers to pay their bills on time. So, the question this week is, "Are these fees too much to ask for?"

A. Yes, they are.
B. No, they are not.
C. I'm not affected so I don't care.
