Dual college courses at CHS

CENTERVILLE — Centerville High School provides three courses in the building that receives dual high school and college credit.  A nursing program and calculus class are taught at Indian Hills Community College and also provide dual credit. These dual course offerings provide additional windows of opportunity at CHS.

Camie Hill is the instructor for the College Composition I and II class. She possesses a Master’s degree in   English: Rhetoric, Composition and Professional Communication and has taught at CHS for 13 years.

“I feel like I am officially prepared for hard college courses,” stated Avery Schmidt shortly after she handed in her final 20 page paper.  Addison Kepner said, “Mrs. Hill gave us a good taste of what a college class would be like.”  The course emphasizes expository and analytical writing.  The goals of the course include critical thinking; demonstrating stylistic, mechanical and grammatical competence in writing; organizing one’s ideas logically; and creating writing that uses evidence to support one’ ideas. Within their essays, students also focus on the five patterns of development and research writing.

Students work on the writing process in class.  During the writing process, students use strategies to generate ideas. From there, they evaluate what the writing’s purpose, expectations, audience and tone would be. They then identify their thesis/claim, which is their controlling idea or central point in their essay.  After identifying their thesis, they work on supporting their thesis with evidence. They must determine the type and quality of evidence to include and how to make their evidence specific to clarify meaning for the readers.  From there they learn to organize their evidence into their final product, developing and strengthening their writing as needed by editing, rewriting and revising.  Kylie Howington, as she handed in her paper after final revision stated, “I don’t know whether I should be excited or scared of what my grade will be.”

This course involves use of CHS laptops for research and writing.  All writing is saved to the school’s network and can be accessed from any school computer. “Sometimes you spend so long on a paper, it’s hard to let the paper go,” commented Jakob Hawkins.  The writing process is a valuable one and will be used throughout the student’s life.

The Daily Iowegian will publish an Editorial Question of the Week on the Opinion page. The Iowegian wants readers to think about the Internal Revenue Service scandal. Dick Polman in an editorial wrote "the IRS' targeting of small-fry conservative groups was not a conspiratorial socialist plot. It was knuckleheaded, ill-supervised bureaucratic ineptitude." So, the question of the week is, "Do you agree or disagree with Polman's analysis of the IRS scandal?"

A. Agree
B. Disagree
C. Not sure
