Appanoose County Farm Bureau celebrates Food Check-Out Week

CENTERVILLE — Iowa farmers work hard year-round to show consumers how they grow a variety of safe, affordable food.  But the week of Feb. 17-23, Iowans are encouraged to reach out to farmers and get their questions answered about the many healthy, affordable food options at their local grocery stores. During National Food Check-Out Week, Iowa farmers are sharing their perspectives and offering tips to help consumers stretched their family food budgets.

While Food Check-Out Week celebrates the fact that most Americans spend, on average, less than 10 percent of their disposable personal income on food, this year’s initiative also encourages consumers to spend those dollars wisely on healthy food options.

Today, we have so many choices when we purchase food at the grocery store. We celebrate the diversity of the food options our farmers are proud to provide. Since less than four percent of Iowans farm today, we especially want to show people where their food comes from. Farmers work hard to provide consumers options. People should know that eating healthy, while on a budget, is very possible today.

Consumers can also find Iowa-specific information regarding farming at www.farmersfeedus.org/ia, an interactive web site that allows visitors to “meet” Iowa farmers and tour their operations.

Iowans can learn more about the importance of protecting food choice at www.choose2choose.com, a campaign developed by concerned mothers who want to bring attention to where food comes from; explaining the importance of food choices and the farmers who work hard to provide them.

The Daily Iowegian will publish an Editorial Question of the Week on the Opinion page. The Iowegian wants readers to think about the Internal Revenue Service scandal. Dick Polman in an editorial wrote "the IRS' targeting of small-fry conservative groups was not a conspiratorial socialist plot. It was knuckleheaded, ill-supervised bureaucratic ineptitude." So, the question of the week is, "Do you agree or disagree with Polman's analysis of the IRS scandal?"

A. Agree
B. Disagree
C. Not sure
