Dear Editor,
Regarding recent comments in the Des Moines Register, I am disappointed that for some greed trumps public safety. To suggest that Iowa State Troopers should not receive funds from the Road Use Tax Fund to supervise our highways as called for in the Iowa Constitution is a political power game we can ill afford in today’s economic environment.
The number of Troopers on the road protecting the public has dwindled in recent years despite an increase in the number of cars travelling the roads. As a result, fewer Troopers must cover more miles. If you were one of the countless drivers incapacitated during the recent storm, this should not sit well with you.
The Road Use Tax Fund is not the property of the road building industry. It is Iowans’ tax dollars that are used to construct, maintain, and supervise public highways. Our State Troopers are on the front line supervising the highways and making sure Iowans can safely travel through the state. It is time to for the state to get its priorities straight by avoiding political one-upmanship and restoring funding for the Troopers.
