Appanoose County in line for federal highway funds

WASHINGTON — Sen. Chuck Grassley said that the Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration has awarded two grants totaling $3,396,660 to Iowa through the Emergency Relief program. The program provides funding for federal highways or roads through federal land that are in need of repair due to natural disasters.

“These funds will help make necessary repairs to Iowa’s highways after the severe weather caused so much damage to our transportation infrastructure,” Grassley said. “This will be another step for Iowans working to get their lives back on track after these natural disasters.”

The U.S. Department of Transportation will distribute the funds as shown below.

• $2,870,218 to help restore essential traffic, minimize the extent of damage and protect the remaining facilities as well as permanent repairs necessary to restore highways to their pre-disaster condition that were affected by the severe storm systems beginning on May 25, 2008 which included tornadoes, heavy rains, wind, hail and thunderstorms causing flooding and related impacts to transportation systems in Iowa. Flooding forced the closure of 464 miles of Iowa’s primary transportation system and 303 bridges and culverts. The secondary road system also suffered substantial damage. The counties affected include: Adair, Adams, Allamakee, Appanoose, Audubon, Benton, Black Hawk, Boone, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Carroll, Cass, Cedar, Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Clarke, Clayton, Clinton, Crawford, Dallas, Davis, Decatur, Delaware, Des Moines, Dubuque, Fayette, Floyd, Franklin, Fremont, Greene, Grundy, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Harrison, Henry, Howard, Humboldt, Iowa, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Kossuth, Lee, Linn, Louisa, Lucas, Lyon, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, Mills, Mitchell, Monona, Monroe, Montgomery, Muscatine, Page, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Polk, Pottawattamie, Poweshiek, Ringgold, Scott, Shelby, Story, Tama, Taylor, Union, Van Buren, Wapello, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Webster, Winnebago, Winneshiek, Woodbury, Worth and Wright.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the recent decision by the Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Directors to increase the fee for late payment of water bills. In a story published in Wednesday's Ad Express, board members announced a 10 percent late fee after two days late, a $50 red tag fee for accounts unpaid after seven days late and a $25 shut off fee, water service terminated after two weeks late. The board said the decision to increase the fees associated with late payment is to encourage customers to pay their bills on time. So, the question this week is, "Are these fees too much to ask for?"

A. Yes, they are.
B. No, they are not.
C. I'm not affected so I don't care.
