CENTERVILLE —
On Wednesday, the Centerville High School underwent a chilling anti-alcohol campaign hosted by the Centerville Police Department and the Mercy Medical Center.
The program, called "Every 15 Minutes," brought chilling statistics to CHS students and staff. Starting at 9 a.m. the “Grim Reaper” periodically pulled students from class. After they left, an officer read their eulogy that pronounced the student “dead” after suffering fatal wounds in a car accident. The students, after the placement of theatrical makeup to simulate injuries sustained in a fatal accident, went back to class, and were told to talk to no one for the rest of the day.
At 2 p.m. an assembly was held in Simon Estes Auditorium that went further in depth about the program. Statistics show that every 15 minutes, a person dies in a car crash involving alcohol. These statistics further show that for every DUI arrest, that same person has driven 87 other times while under the influence.
Guest speakers Keith Glosser, Chris Spencer, Tom and Ben Lange, Rich Scott, Bruce Buttel and Dan Howington all stressed the importance of making safe decisions when getting behind the wheel. A parent of a student “killed” in the program also spoke, reading her daughter’s eulogy to the silent auditorium.
High school students who “died” in a car wreck were Adam Steinbach, Hannah Raines, Tea Stevens, Megan Farley, Brenna Moorman, Kaitlyn Daniels, Samantha McDanel, Trent McMahon, Roman Royer, Kylie Howington, Neal Caylor, Josh Cortesio, Annie Wiskus, Taylor Phillips, Megan Allen and Angela Miller. Many of these students were selected at random to show how accidents involving alcohol can happen to anyone.
Those who helped on the Centerville Police Department were Dan Howington, Tom Demry, Allen Sharp, Mike Moore, Jeremy Engle and Robert Earhart. Those with Mercy Medical Center were Jamie Slayton, Brenda Howington, Cody Kauzlarich, Jeremy Hudson, Dan Turner, Darcy Sheldon, Tina Young and Terri Seay. Others that were involved were Keith Glosser, Mike Bogle, John Steinbach, Kim Swanson, Vicki Butler, Chris Sharp, Alyssa Cowan and Andy Mericle.
