Tripp nominated by special convention

PELLA — Tim Tripp, an attorney and Pella Community School Board member has accepted the nomination of the Democratic Party to run for the Iowa Senate in District 40. District 40 includes Appanoose, Monroe and Mahaska counties; northwest Wapello County, including the towns of Blakesburg, Chillicothe, Eddyville and Kirkville; and northeast Marion County, including the city of Pella.

Tripp accepted the nomination at a Special Convention in Albia on July 18. Democratic committee members from District 40 nominated Tripp on the first ballot in a unanimous vote.

“Even though I’ve just been officially nominated, I’ve been out for months talking with voters all over District 40,” Tripp said. “And whether it’s people facing job losses or or schools facing severe budget cuts, its clear that the challenges of this district are economic.  And its also clear that people are looking for moderate solutions to today’s issues. They’re tired of extremist politicians distracting the business of the legislature away from the economic priorities of middle class Iowans, and the education needs of all Iowans. I believe people want a Senator who will work together with people of both parties on initiatives that encourage the continued growth and prosperity of our local communities.

“I believe my experience as an attorney, businessman, community leader and family man from Pella gives me the right perspective and moderate background to best represent this district in the Iowa State Senate.”

Tripp has been very active in the community, serving as an Elder at Third Reformed Church in Pella and on it’s executive board from 2008 to 2011. He also served as president of the Pella Public Library Board in 2006. And currently, Tim serves on the Pella Community School Board.

Tripp is a private practice attorney, specializing primarily in Social Security disability law. He owns Tripp, P.C., with offices in Pella and West Des Moines. Tripp is a member of the Christian Legal Society; he served on the Iowa Legal Aid Board and Iowa Legal Aid Foundation from 2008 to 2011, and in both 2009 and 2010, Tripp received a Pro Bono Service commendation by the Iowa Supreme Court for his volunteer legal service for low-income Iowans.

Tripp grew up in Sully and graduated from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) in1984 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He graduated from Brooklyn Law School in 1989. In 1996, he and his wife Kathy Jaarsma Tripp moved back to Pella to raise their family.

“I will continue to campaign by visiting the communities of Senate District 40, listening to the concerns of the people, and working to address their challenges and ideas at the State Capitol. I encourage people to contact me at www.tripp4senate.org or call me directly at (641) 628-1424.”

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the debate Rep. Larry Sheets talks about at the state capital centered on "accepting Medicaid expansion as defined by the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), or choosing to create an Iowa specific health care program. Those who prefer the Medicaid expansion believe the federal government will fulfill its commitments three years from now. Those opposing explain that the federal government is only capable of that by borrowing the money from the Chinese." So, the question this week is, "Should Iowa accept the federal government's Medicaid expansion or create a health care program specific to the state?"

A. Accept Medicaid expansion.
B. Create health care program.
