CENTERVILLE —
Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Centerville in October is an attempt to help end violence against women, men and children.
Centerville Mayor Marsha Mitchell Wednesday morning in her office signed a proclamation to recognize the importance of the issue of domestic violence. The proclamation urges all citizens to actively participate in the scheduled activities and programs sponsored by the Crisis Center and Women's Shelter in Ottumwa.
Cheryl Brown, director of the Crisis Center and Women's Shelter stated, "Our mission is to provide emergency shelter and services for survivors of domestic or sexual violence and to promote a violence-free society through community education and advocacy."
Appanoose and Monroe counties provide a variety of assistance to help victims of domestic violence, Linda Handling, outreach advocate said. These services are free of charge and include individual counseling, local support groups, community education and training and court and medical advocacy.
The Crisis Center and Women's Shelter in Ottumwa will be hosting a Domestic Violence Awareness Party Friday from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at 421 Church St. in Ottumwa. The community is invited to come and learn more about domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
The Crisis Center and Women's Shelter in Ottumwa shelters an average of 400 people each year and receives more than 1,000 calls on its 24-hour crisis line. If you or someone you know is a victim and wants to talk about it, call 1-800-464-8340 to speak in confidence to a counselor.
The ball cap presented to the mayor with the logo: "Real Men Know: Strength Is Not for Hurting" are for sale for $10 and can be ordered by calling 1-800-464-8340.
