Council schedules public hearing for Feb. 6

CENTERVILLE — The Centerville City Council Monday night voted 5-0 to approve a resolution setting a public hearing for 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6 at City Hall to receive input regarding changing Highways 2 and 5 lane configuration through Centerville.

In 2009, Iowa Department of Transportation changed the lanes for Highway 2 and 5 running through Centerville from four to three.

In recent weeks, Councilman Edwin Brand circulated petitions asking for signatures to change the lanes back to four and to change the lights at the intersection of Highway 2 and Drake Avenue. Following the meeting, Brand said the DOT and state political leaders for this area will be invited to the Feb. 6 public hearing.

In other action, the city council, after a public hearing, voted 5-0 to approve a resolution declaring their intent to have a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6 at City Hall to take action on the authorization of a loan, disbursement agreement and issuance of notes not to exceed $1.2 million for city sewer repairs.

According to information in the council's agenda, Centerville has applied for a loan through the Iowa Water Pollution Control Works Financing program and the Iowa Finance Authority has agreed to purchase the city's $1.2 million note.

The city's agenda information says the loan, disbursement agreement and note "shall be payable solely and only out of the net earnings of the Municipal Sewer System ... and shall not be general obligations of the City or payable in any manner by taxation and the City shall be in no manner liable by reason of the failure of the net revenues to be sufficient for the payment of the Loan and Disbursement Agreement and Note."

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about President Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama was elected president, two significant things have occurred: The military repealed the "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" policy allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve and just recently he publicly said he supports gay marriage. For some, these actions signal a shift away from God, morality and threatens national security. Others say it's about time people in same-sex relationships can wed and openly gay service members do not threaten national security. Now, depending on who you listen to, President Obama is the first "gay" president of the United States. Is that something to worry about? So, the question this week is, "President Barack Obama, the first "gay" president of the United States. Is it cause for concern?"

A. Yes it is.
B. No it is not.
C. Don't care.
D. Not sure.
