Half of Appanoose County’s 12 precinct’s caucus night totals transmitted to the Iowa GOP were lost in translation.
As a result, Appanoose County’s total vote count the night of the caucus drops by 51, which means a total of 486 votes were cast Tuesday night, Jan. 3.
The certified vote total for the candidates changed, also.
Rick Santorum still wins Appanoose County, but not with 174 votes reported after the caucus had ended, but he is now certified to have received 146 votes.
Rick Perry’s vote total did not change and remains at 90. Perry also remains in second place.
Ron Paul’s vote total goes from the 77 reported after the caucus had ended to 85 certified votes, which means he took third place.
Newt Gingrich’s 71 votes reported after the caucus had ended jumps to 72 certified votes, which means he took fourth place.
Mitt Romney’s 87 votes reported after the caucus had ended drops by 20 to 67 certified votes, which puts him in fifth place in Appanoose County.
The certified vote totals released by the Iowa GOP for the 2012 Iowa caucus shows no changes in the precincts of Bellair and Lincoln townships, Pleasant, Franklin and Caldwell townships, Centerville Ward 2, Centerville Ward 3, Johns and Independence townships and Taylor and Chariton townships.
The certified vote total in Centerville Ward 1 increased by one vote to 40, which went to Gingrich.
The certified vote total in Udell Township dropped by six to 25, with the six coming from Buddy Roemer’s total.
The certified vote total in Union Township dropped by 29 to 11, with all 29 coming out of Santorum’s total.
The certified vote total in Vermillion, Douglas and Sharon townships increased by eight to 76, with Paul picking up the eight votes.
The certified vote total in Walnut Township increased by one to 26, with the one going to Santorum.
The certified vote total in Washington and Wells townships dropped by 26 to 53, with 20 coming out of Romney’s total and six out of Roemer’s total.
DES MOINES — The Republican Party of Iowa Thursday morning released the final, certified vote totals of the Jan. 3 Iowa caucus presidential preference vote. The final, certified vote totals represent 1,766 of the state’s 1,774 caucus precincts, and reflect a record-breaking 121,503 Iowans who participated.

Certified vote totals were unavailable for eight of Iowa’s 1,774 precincts. Full, certified vote totals per precinct are available online at www.iowagop.org.
“Our goal throughout the certification process was to most accurately reflect and report how Iowans voted the evening of January 3,” said Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Matt Strawn. “We understand the importance to the candidates involved, but as Iowans, we understand the responsibility we have as temporary caretakers of the Iowa caucuses.”
Iowa GOP rules provided for a 14-day period by which each of Iowa’s 99 counties were required to submit a Form E document from each of the caucus precincts within the county. The Form E document is the official record of the presidential preference vote in each of Iowa’s 1,774 precincts.
The deadline for county Republican officials to submit the Form E documents was 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Following Wednesday’s deadline, Iowa GOP officials were able to certify results from 1,766 of the state’s 1,774 precincts.
Strawn noted that a hallmark of the Iowa caucuses is the openness and transparency within which the proceedings occur. Not only do voting Iowans and presidential campaign representatives have the opportunity to observe the vote counting in each of the state’s precincts, but each presidential campaign had senior campaign officials in the Iowa GOP’s official tabulation center on caucus night.
