Anyone can learn CPR and everyone should! Sadly, 70 percent of Americans may be helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they do not know CPR or their training has significantly lapsed. And this alarming statistic could hit close to home, because home is exactly where 80 percent of cardiac arrests occur. Put very simply: The life you save with CPR is most likely to be someone you love.
The American Heart Association, the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association and their Iowa affiliate, AED Access For All were on hand as Gov. Terry Branstad signed a proclamation marking June 1-7, 2011 as CPR and AED Awareness Week across Iowa.
Susie Gibbs, who performed CPR on her husband Butch before paramedics arrived, organized the event and works tirelessly with Butch to educate Iowans about CPR and the importance of AEDs.
The two associations urge people to not be a bystander in a cardiac emergency. Learning how to perform Hands-Only CPR can be done in just 60 seconds. With more than 300,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurring each year and four of every five of those happening at home, statistics show that if a person is called upon to do CPR, it will likely be on a family member at home.
Earlier this year, the Iowa Legislature ensured more and more Iowans will learn CPR as it is now a requirement for high school graduation.
