On Thursday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. Monroe County Master Gardeners will feature guest speaker Patty Rowland at the ISU Extension Office in Albia.
With a life-long passion for growing flowers, Rowland’s presentation will draw upon her years of experience in growing and caring for her favorite spring flower: The iris. In addition to growing irises in her own gardens, Rowland’s love affair with the iris has resulted in travels with destination points that offer the splendor of irises in bloom. Schreiner’s Iris Farm near Salem, Ore., where one marvels at the spectacle of colors in their 10 acres of display gardens, was one such destination point, as was Cooley’s Iris Gardens near Silverton, Ore. and Rainbow Iris Farms in Bedford.
After a brief explanation of iris classifications and descriptive terms, Rowland’s presentation will focus on how to plant, grow and care for irises and will also include a segment on iris pests and diseases. By adding in a little iris trivia, some pictures of iris gardens and an introduction to Iowa’s native iris, “I. virginica,” Rowland’s presentation will have “a little bit of something” for anyone interested in irises.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served by the Monroe County Master Gardeners.
