The regular Cincinnati City Council meeting opened with a full council present last Tuesday evening, March 9.
Fire Chief Rick Butler requested permission from the council to look into purchasing a laptop to be shared between the fire department and city man, Jake Steele. The council approved purchase of the laptop.
Butler also reported that four firefighters had begun their firefighter II classes and informed the council that he needed to be re-appointed as fire chief since a new mayor had been elected. Butler also reminded the council of the upcoming dinner at the community center. The dinner will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, March 27.
Nancy Huisman from Hall Engineering was on hand to give an update on the ongoing situation with one of the city's pump stations. The DNR has required that the city fix an overflow problem that is occurring.
Huisman stated that a waste water facility plan had been finished and submitted with the grant application the city had completed. Huisman stated that the city should know within a few weeks whether they will receive the grant that was applied for to help with the sewer system update.
In the mean time Hall Engineering, along with Steele and the DNR had installed a check valve to stop the back up of raw sewage during heavy rainfalls and also worked to bring the pumping station on Garfield Street up to pumping capacity. According to Huisman, the pumping capacity of the pumps put in place when the system was designed were 60 gallon a minute and the original plan called for the pumps to work at 97 gallon a minute. Huisman concluded that most likely a new pump station would need to be put in place with three pumps instead of the current two in place, a portion of the sewer pipes would need to be lined and the force main pipe to the lagoon would need to be replaced and updated from three inches to four inches. According to Huisman, in the next few weeks the project should move forward as the city finds out the results of the grant application and Hall Engineering continues to work with the DNR to finalize the wastewater facility plan.
