Centerville women’s cooking, baking and canning skills recognized at Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES — Molly Thomas of Centerville took first place in the Wayne's Saint Patrick's Day Treats contest judged Saturday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Thomas's festive creation earned a $30 cash prize. Thomas placed third in the Desserts for Christina contest judged Saturday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

An Honorable Mention was awarded to Olive Jean Tarbell of Centerville in the Desserts for Jake contest judged Friday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville earned Reserve Sweepstakes honors in the C&H Canned Fruit Butters competition judged Wednesday, Aug. 8 prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair. She took first in Rhubarb category and second in Apricot, Peach and Plum categories. "A fruit butter is pulp and sugar cooked to a rather thick consistency, but not jellied. Fruit butters often contain spices," according to the Iowa State Fair.

Robin Tarbell-Thomas, Centerville took Honorable Mention in the Non-Baked Items in the Trust Your Recipe to Gurley's competition judged Friday during the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Olive Jean Tarbell of Centerville, took second place in the Land O'Lakes Best Butter Cookie contest judged Thursday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Molly Thomas of Centerville took second place in the Variations of Candy division in the Chocolate Storybook Candies competition judged Wednesday, Aug. 8 prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Under FUDGE Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville took third in Maple Nut category and second in Dark Chocolate category. Under VARIATIONS OF CANDY Robin Tarbell-Thomas took third in Peanut Brittle category and second in Bon Bons category. Molly Thomas took first in Popcorn and second in Candy Other than Named.

Robin Tarbell-Thomas took second in Yellow (Wax) Beans category  in the Dahl's Canned Vegetables competition judged Wednesday, Aug. 8 prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair. She also took first in Beets category, first in Sauerkraut (fermented) category and first in Tomato and Vegetable Juice Blend category. She took second in the categories of Okra and Tomato Juice. She took third in these categories: Carrots, Whole-Kernel Corn, Shelled Green Peas, Asparagus Spears, Sweet Peppers (in water), pint jar and White Potatoes (cubed or whole).
