Many children experience earning a little extra cash selling lemonade over the summer. Not all children can say they earned $500 at their lemonade stand and chose to give it all away. That is exactly what happened this summer at Curious Kids Childcare.
This years recipient was Centerville’s Reserve Police Officers Unit. The reserve consists of eight volunteer officers who train monthly and purchase their own equipment. The reserve officers are seen in action at Pancake Day, the County Fair, school sporting events and assisting other officers.
Throughout the summer the children at Curious Kids participated in special activities with representatives from the reserve unit. Sergeant Tyson Howard demonstrated how to pull finger prints for evidence. Reserve Officer Richard Brooke brought in his equipment for the kids to try on and talked with them about how the money earned at the lemonade stand will be used.
Before accepting the $500 check from the childcare, Officer Angie Widmer and Officer Jed Ballanger set up an obstacle course in which the kids had to ride bikes through cones, shoot a Nerf gun at a target, club a bag, and make an arrest. The kids also got to sit inside a patrol car and operate its lights. State Trooper Jim Karp also stopped several times to talk with the kids about safety. The kids got to see his equipment also.
Each year the kids sell lemonade outside St. Mary’s Catholic Church every Friday afternoon in July. This is the fifth year teaching the kids about hard work and generosity. In the past they have donated to Sharon Bluff’s State Park for Center 2000 improvements, C.A.A.R.E., Drake Public Library and The Appanoose County Historical Museum.
The group chooses to make donations to businesses they see as vital to the community. Some of these businesses do great work but are not recognized, appreciated or utilized by more people. It is the groups hope that as a childcare provider they can bring these businesses to the attention of more families and while doing so, teach children they can make a difference by hard work and generosity.
