Centerville Mayor Marsha Mitchell Monday night during the Centerville City Council meeting introduced Bailey Jackson, the local winner of the "If I were mayor, I would ... ." essay contest.
Mitchell read Jackson's entire letter. The first paragraph of the letter follows.
"If I were mayor, I would work hard to bring unity and pride to our community. I think we could do this by working on problems like crime and drug use, improving the appearance of our homes and streets, and having more fun as a community."
Jackson, 12, is the daughter of Scott and Kelly Jackson, of Centerville.
"If I were mayor, I would ..." is a state-wide essay contest sponsored by the Iowa League of Cities open to all students in seventh grade English and social studies classes, Mitchell said. At the state level, the Iowa League of Cities awards a $300 savings bond to one student in each congressional district and one grand prize winner is selected to represent the entire state.
According to The Iowa League of Cities website, five winners will be chosen by the end of this month. The winners, parents and teachers will be recognized at a special ceremony as part of the annual Legislative Day event.
Mitchell decided to localize the contest by going to Howar Junior High School and photocopying the student's essays being sent to the Iowa League of Cities. Mitchell then picked one to represent Centerville.
Mitchell praised Jackson for her essay, telling her she paid attention to the directions in writing it and she had a good chance of winning at the state level.
