CENTERVILLE —
The Centerville City Council approved three Safe Routes To School agenda items and discussed two others during Monday’s meeting.
The council approved a revised route for SRTS. The revised route follows along South Main Street from Cottage Street to Lane Street with short sections on Frances Street, Cottage Street and Terry Street.
The council approved a revised budget for SRTS. The total estimated project cost is $334,400. The SRTS project grant is $249,595, which leaves the city responsible for $84,800 of the cost.
Estimate of probable costs itemized includes $20,900 for engineering design, $6,500 for construction engineering, $305,000 for construction and $2,000 for non-infrastructure projects.
Councilman Rob Lind said the city might have to look at bonding to pay for SRTS.
"Given the financial structure of the city right now and the things we need to do to ensure that we have a future, I would think with our bonding capacity that we could stick our neck out on this," Lind said.
The council approved a revised concept statement for SRTS. The revised concept statement talks about route, cost and bid letting, which is expected to be June 18, 2013.
The council discussed sidewalk width on Cottage Street and non-infrastructure projects for SRTS.
SRTS has been an ongoing city project to construct .8 miles of concrete sidewalk originally between Lakeview Elementary and Howar Junior High School. The sidewalk would help promote children to bicycle or walk to school and get pedestrians to get out and walk.
In other action:
The council approved a resolution to sell land to Chariton Valley Regional Housing Trust in Sunnyside Addition for $10. CVRHTF plans to build a new house on the land on South 15th Street.
The council approved a resolution to hold a public hearing on Jan. 21 to consider the sale of land to Patty Cisler, Lot 25 in Bella Vista, for $6,000 with $1,500 to be held in ernest.
The council tabled the discussion on the Mikels Drive improvement project until its next meeting.
The council discussed a street light or lights at the intersection of Highway 5 and Dewey Road.
One street light may not be enough and sidewalk would help to contribute to public safety. And it was thought it would be a good idea to approach WalMart to see what they could contribute.
The council briefly discussed the airport survey for airport land acquisition project.
Centerville Mayor Jim Senior recognized Dave Rummans as the "Citizen of the Month."
The next Centerville City Council meeting is Jan. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
