CENTERVILLE —
Members of the Centerville Community School District Board of Education during an Aug. 13 meeting by consensus agreed to sell the now closed Cincinnati Elementary and Mystic Elementary school buildings.
The board asked Superintendent Tony Ryan to contact the school's attorney and also to check on liability insurance if playground equipment were to be removed.
Members of the Centerville Community School District Board of Eeducation and visitors who attended the Aug. 13 meeting took a two hour tour of district facilities at Lakeview, Garfield, Central and the high school. Ryan said the facility tour was a chance to review the summer cleaning process and talk about building improvements and repairs, like the leaking high school roof causing damage to auditorium walls.
In other action, the board agreed to contact Mary Jane Vens with Iowa Assocaiation of School Boards to meet with them for a work session to help establish and align Ryan's professional growth plans with school board goals.
During the meeting, Ryan said the board secretary and building and transportation department head's salary placement needed to be considered and discussed. Board consensus was to have Ryan "present the proposed salary along with data for the change in salary."
In other action, the board approved four resignations, two transfers and approved nine contracts and adjustments.
The board voted to add a half-time preschool early childhood teacher at the childhood center due to an over enrollment of 10 students.
In a different issue, Ryan talked about the football concession stand. Ryan said the stand's original budget was $51,000, with Pepsi donating $15,000, Booster Club pledging $18,000 over two years, with $9,000 received in fiscal year 2012, and the athletic department pledging $18,000 over two years.
The building has problems, as Ryan pointed out to the board, like no waste drains, water lines, electricity and the retaining wall is not completed. The original building was torn down.
After discussion, it was decided to authorize Ryan to get the restrooms completed and have a structural engineer review the status of the building. The cost for such items to be paid for out of the PPEL fund.
This meeting was gaveled in at 6:30 p.m. and lasted more than five hours when it adjourned at 11:43 p.m.
