Something old is now something new

CENTERVILLE — A new store. A new manager. A new shopping experience for Centerville residents.

It all came together following a ribbon cutting at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the new Walmart Supercenter store at 23148 Highway 5 south in Centerville.

The new Walmart Centerville store has a new first-time store manager in Brad Henderson, 29, of Osage, located in northern Iowa.

Henderson has been with Walmart nine years in seven different buildings. His first job with Walmart was in Cedar Falls as a grocery stocker and prior to coming to Centerville he was the shift manager at the Decorah Walmart.

Henderson said first-time store managers in a new store doesn't happen very often.

"So that opportunity is amazing for myself to be able to take over a new facility," Henderson said, noting it's the smallest store he's worked in. "So I was very fortunate for the opportunity to be a part of it."

Henderson said customers can expect a whole new shopping experience, starting with fresh produce, dry grocery, deli, bakery, fresh meat and a wider assortment of goods in a bigger store.

"It's all part of that expansion of the 33,000 square footage," Henderson said. "Plus it's allowed a wider assortment of products throughout  the whole store with that added square footage for the customers."

Henderson said his own experience with Walmart and the added jobs created in the Centerville area is  indicative of their commitment to the community.

"To be able to bring so many jobs for the community is amazing," Henderson said. "And for myself and a lot of other managers that had an opportunity to start as a stocker and then nine years later be able to take over the possession of the store manager and have the opportunity to teach and train and help with a lot of other associates in their careers is an amazing opportunity."

Henderson said as store manager his job is to oversee total operations, help develop associates' and managers' careers and get involved in customer service.

"And as the Walmart manager to provide the lowest prices in town for the customers who want to shop," Henderson said.

Some numbers between the old and new Walmart stores in Centerville.

The original Walmart Centerville store on Highway 5 north had 59,000 square-feet of space, Henderson said. The new store has 92,000 square-feet of space.

The old Walmart Centerville store employed approximately 93, Henderson said. The new store will employ approximately 160.

"So, more or less, 70 more jobs were created," Henderson said. "Hourly, supervisory and management level."

Henderson graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a management degree.

Henderson is married to his wife Andrea and they now call Appanoose County home.

The Daily Iowegian will publish an Editorial Question of the Week on the Opinion page. The Iowegian wants readers to think about the Internal Revenue Service scandal. Dick Polman in an editorial wrote "the IRS' targeting of small-fry conservative groups was not a conspiratorial socialist plot. It was knuckleheaded, ill-supervised bureaucratic ineptitude." So, the question of the week is, "Do you agree or disagree with Polman's analysis of the IRS scandal?"

A. Agree
B. Disagree
C. Not sure
