Special treat at quilt show

CENTERVILLE — The annual Honey of a Quilt Show will feature the work of Lorraine Dickinson. In the past two of three years, Dickinson designed and exhibited quilts at the American Quilter's Society's annual national show in Des Moines. These works of art will be displayed at the quilt show hosted by the Centerville quilt guild, Material Girlz on March 19 and 20 at Honey Creek Resort.

Dickinson saw her first quilt when she was 15 years old. Prior to quilting, she sewed clothing for her dolls on a treadle machine and learned the fine art of hand sewing from her grandmother. Active in 4-H, she continued advancing her sewing skills. She longed to be a clothes designer like Edith Head, but she became involved in raising a family and pursued a degree in computer programming. At first she made baby quilts for gifts, then a Bicentennial Quilt in 1976, and participated in group quilts with others in her church. Little did she realize the importance of computer programming outside of the workplace.

Now she finds computer programming a creative outlet. Dickinson designs quilts using computer programs; EQ4 through EQ7 (a CAD), Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Paint. Creating patterns with curves and unique features, her magnificent “Coral Blues Finale” was part of a quilt challenge through a EQ-Art group with EQ6 where the quilt had to have circular pieces in a block. Experienced quilters appreciate the difficulty that curved pieces present in quilt creation. It is a difficult technique used throughout the quilt and it gave her a sense of real accomplishment. Sewing with curves is “like putting in a sleeve or gusset.”

At the prestigious AQS show, she also has exhibited “Cabin View I-Farmhouse” a Log Cabin variation, “Christmas Metallica” and “Occidental Collage” with its unique designs on both the front and back. She continues to design for EQ Challenges or for Shops at Granny's House, her daughter's quilt shop, west of Moravia. She tries to design two or three a year for the shop, keeping in mind the skills of the average quilter.

Her inspiration comes from fabric designs with noted quilt designer, Jinny Beyer, as a personal favorite. She likes Jinny's intricate border designs and the challenges afforded in piecing border fabrics to match.

Machine piecing is her favorite technique but she also enjoys hand piecing and applique. She has a common ailment among quilters, that of “Too many classes, so much to do and so little time.” There were three creations sent to the quilter since January, although she does her own quilting on small projects.

Quilting became a family affair. Her husband would help her with color in her design and her daughter, Sharon and granddaughter, Jill, are both well known for the beautiful quilts and the classes they provide through their shop.

This year's quilt show promises to be bigger than ever. The show will be held March 19 and 20 at Honey Creek Resort. Hours are from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. There will be vendors, trunk shows, door prizes, a silent auction and several demonstrations by experts. Classes will be offered during the day and Saturday evening for a fee. Admission to the Honey of a Quilt Show is $3. Come see the beautiful creations by Lorraine Dickinson and the other quilters of the Material Girlz quilt guild.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about President Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama was elected president, two significant things have occurred: The military repealed the "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" policy allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve and just recently he publicly said he supports gay marriage. For some, these actions signal a shift away from God, morality and threatens national security. Others say it's about time people in same-sex relationships can wed and openly gay service members do not threaten national security. Now, depending on who you listen to, President Obama is the first "gay" president of the United States. Is that something to worry about? So, the question this week is, "President Barack Obama, the first "gay" president of the United States. Is it cause for concern?"

A. Yes it is.
B. No it is not.
C. Don't care.
D. Not sure.
